County far from Southern Border declares emergency due to illegal immigration.
New York County Declares State of Emergency Over Plan to Send Illegal Immigrants
Officials in Rockland County, New York, located thousands of miles from the U.S.-Mexico border, have declared a state of emergency after New York City officials approved a plan to send illegal immigrants there.
Rockland County Executive Ed Day expressed concern over the plan, stating that the county is already facing a housing crisis and lacks the infrastructure to care for the influx of illegal immigrants. Day noted that New York City declared itself a sanctuary city in 2016, but Rockland County cannot sustain the volume of undocumented migrants that Mayor Eric Adams intends to send over.
Under the state of emergency, other municipalities are prohibited from bringing and housing people in Rockland County, and hotels are prohibited from housing immigrants without a license. The State of Emergency is effective May 6, 2023, and will remain in effect for 30 days, at which time it may be extended.
Advocates for illegal immigrants and asylum seekers have criticized Adams’s plan, and Day has likened it to “tossing people into the middle of the ocean with nowhere to swim.”
Since last year, tens of thousands of illegal immigrants sourced from the U.S.–Mexico border have been bused to New York City under a program spearheaded by Texas Gov. Greg Abbott. Former Arizona Gov. Doug Ducey also sent busloads of aliens to a handful of Democrat-run cities like New York, but his term as governor ended earlier this year after Democrat Katie Hobbs took over.
