Senate Dems to hold gun control caucus on Thursday.
Senate Democrats to Discuss Gun Control in Wake of Recent Mass Shootings
Senate Democrats are set to hold a special caucus meeting on Thursday to discuss gun control in the wake of the recent mass shootings. During the meeting, Democrats will discuss gun violence and the path forward on gun safety legislation, according to a spokesperson for Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY).
Recent Mass Shooting in Texas
Over the weekend, a gunman opened fire in a Texas mall, leaving nine dead, including the shooter, and injuring at least seven others. The shooting took place at Allen Premium Outlets just 25 miles north of Dallas. Multiple Democrats, including President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris, have urged Congress to take up gun control in the wake of the tragedy.
“The news of this latest mass shooting in Texas is horrifying. We pray for the victims, the survivors, their families, and the community, and thank the first responders. We must keep working to end gun violence in America. We must keep working for stronger gun safety legislation,” Schumer tweeted.
Schumer’s Meeting and the Current Political Climate
In addition to the caucus meeting on Thursday, Schumer is reportedly expected to meet with a smaller group of senators on Tuesday. With a narrow 51-seat majority, Schumer is unlikely to overcome a Republican filibuster or the GOP-controlled House. In 2022, Congress passed gun reform that was intended to make it more difficult for people with mental health problems to obtain a firearm. But since then, the GOP has regained control of the House. Republicans have largely lined up in opposition against more aggressive measures.
Schumer’s meeting comes amid a busy week on Capitol Hill as lawmakers grapple with the debt ceiling standoff and the expiration of Title 42 on Thursday.
What Can Be Done?
It’s clear that gun control is a contentious issue in American politics. However, it’s important to remember that mass shootings are a tragic reality that affect countless families and communities. While there may not be a simple solution, it’s crucial that lawmakers continue to work towards stronger gun safety legislation to prevent future tragedies.
