Frank Gaffney claims Fox News will pay a lot to keep Tucker Carlson away from broadcasting.
Is Fox News Paying Tucker Carlson to Stay Silent?
Despite being taken off the air, Fox News may still be paying Tucker Carlson millions of dollars to keep him under contract, according to foreign policy analyst and political commentator Frank Gaffney.
The End of an Era
Gaffney believes that the end of Carlson’s primetime show, “Tucker Carlson Tonight,” is a significant loss for conservatives. He says that the show was “arguably the most important platform that conservatives have had, certainly in the past few years. And it comes at a moment when that’s deeply injurious to the effort to wage the war of ideas.”
While Gaffney doesn’t always agree with Carlson’s views, he acknowledges that the show gave a voice to many thoughtful, informed individuals who wouldn’t have had the opportunity to communicate beyond the normal reaches of the conservative movement.
Contractual Constraints
Other political commentators, including former Fox News host Megyn Kelly, believe that Carlson hasn’t technically been fired and that Fox News will continue to pay out his current contract in a way that prevents him from taking his talents elsewhere. Gaffney shares this belief.
Gaffney thinks that Fox executives ended Carlson’s shows to prevent him from talking about ideas or policies that the network’s owners dislike. He says that Fox News “seem to be willing to pay handsomely for the privilege of keeping [Carlson] essentially, incommunicado.”
It’s not entirely clear what contractual constraints still tie Carlson and Fox News together. However, Carlson appears to have retained Bryan Freedman, a lawyer who previously represented Kelly during her split with NBC News.
