Tucker Carlson’s lawyers claim Fox News committed fraud and breached their contract.
Former Fox News Host Accuses Network of Fraud and Breach of Contract
Lawyers representing Tucker Carlson, former Fox News host, have accused the cable news network of fraud and breach of contract. Carlson’s lawyer, Bryan Freedman, sent a letter to Fox News on Tuesday, alleging that the network’s executives and employees, including “Rupert Murdoch himself,” intentionally broke promises made to Carlson “with reckless disregard for the truth,” constituting fraud.
Allegations of Breach of Contract
The letter also alleges that Fox News broke an agreement with Carlson to keep his private communications confidential, not to use them “to take any adverse employment action against him,” and not to settle with Dominion Voting Systems “in a way which would indicate wrongdoing” on Carlson’s part, hurting his reputation. “These actions not only breached the covenant of good faith and fair dealing in the Agreement, but give rise to claims for breach of contract, and intentional and negligent misrepresentation,” the letter reportedly states.
As such, Carlson’s lawyers believe Fox News breached the former host’s contract, making any noncompete provision invalid and freeing Carlson to launch his own show or media endeavor. On Tuesday, Carlson announced he would make his media return, bringing his show to Twitter.
Carlson’s Return to Media
“Starting soon, we’ll be bringing a new version of the show we’ve been doing for the last 6 1/2 years to Twitter,” Carlson said in a video posted to Twitter. “We’ll bring some other things, too, which we’ll tell you about, but for now, we’re just grateful to be here. Free speech is the main right that you have. Without it, you have no others.”
Twitter CEO Elon Musk followed Carlson’s tweet with a clarification, noting that an agreement had not yet been reached while encouraging others to join. “I also want to be clear that we have not signed a deal of any kind whatsoever. Tucker is subject to the same rules & rewards of all content creators,” Musk said. “I hope that many others, particularly from the left, also choose to be content creators on this platform.”
Fox News announced it had parted ways with Carlson on April 24.
