Retired NFL Safety Jack Brewer Opposes California Reparations Push

Retired NFL safety Jack Brewer believes that millions of dollars in reparation payments are not the right approach to improving the lives of Black Americans. The California Reparations Task Force has recommended that the state offer payments of up to $1.2 million to every qualifying Black resident, a move supported by many prominent California leaders. However, Brewer argues that improving literacy rates, fixing the fatherlessness crisis, and returning spirituality to the home and community are much more productive than allocating massive amounts of taxpayer monies.

Reparations Through Education

Brewer suggests that reparations should be focused on education, particularly in places like inner-city Baltimore, where some grades sit around 0%. He believes that the real issues that Black folks face in America, particularly in California, are the fatherlessness crisis and the educational and criminal justice issues. Brewer argues that social justice cannot be completed by just handing out checks to people.

Branded an “Uncle Tom”

Brewer said that whenever he voices his countervailing opinion, he is branded an “Uncle Tom.” However, he does not care because he believes that our kids need spirituality again. A God-fearing person would not demand $4 million checks, but instead, demand for righteousness to be instilled back in the children. Brewer points to troubling Black-on-Black violent crime rates nationwide, sex trafficking at its highest levels, and communities ravaged by the absence of dads in homes.

Final Set of Recommendations

The reparations task force held a public meeting in Oakland, California, on Saturday and voted on the final set of recommendations to be sent to the state’s legislators. The nine-member panel called on the state to offer its Black residents a formal apology in addition to the payments.
