Breaking News: Rep. George Santos Indicted on Multiple Charges
Rep. George Santos (R-NY) has been federally indicted and arrested on 13 counts, including campaign finance fraud, false statements to Congress, and theft of public funds. The Associated Press reported that Santos surrendered to authorities and is expected to make a court appearance later this afternoon.
Charges Against Santos
- Seven counts of wire fraud
- Three counts of money laundering
- One count of theft of public funds
- Two counts of making materially false statements to the House of Representatives
Santos is accused of using political contributions for personal gain, including buying designer clothes and paying off personal credit card debt. He also allegedly lied to donors about the use of funds and unlawfully applied for pandemic-related unemployment benefits.
U.S. Attorney Breon Peace stated that the indictment “seeks to hold Santos accountable for various alleged fraudulent schemes and brazen misrepresentations.”
Despite the charges, Santos is reportedly expected to plead not guilty, according to ABC News.
Santos was first elected to Congress in November 2022. This is a developing story, and updates will be provided as more information becomes available.
