DeSantis backs fundraiser for Marine vet Daniel Penny: ‘Defeat Soros-funded DAs’
Florida Governor Ron DeSantis Stands with Marine Veteran Facing Manslaughter Charge
On Friday, Florida Governor Ron DeSantis shared a fundraiser for Marine veteran Daniel Penny, who turned himself in to authorities to face a second-degree manslaughter charge over the death of Jordan Neely. DeSantis tweeted, “We must defeat the Soros-Funded DAs, stop the Left’s pro-criminal agenda, and take back the streets for law-abiding citizens. We stand with Good Samaritans like Daniel Penny. Let’s show this Marine… America’s got his back.”
The governor’s support for Penny was widely praised on the political Right, with many applauding his promotion of the fundraiser. Penny was charged after placing Neely in a chokehold on a New York City subway. Witnesses say Neely was embarking on an aggressive rant and screaming that he did not care if he went to jail. Neely had an extensive criminal history, including several guilty pleas for violence-related charges.
Support for DeSantis’ Actions
- Marina Medvin tweeted, “WOW!!!!”
- Jake Bequette tweeted, “This is an alpha move. I will continue to push for a red state governor to offer legal sanctuary to Penny, but DeSantis is once again leading the way.”
- Cernovich tweeted, “Heck yes!”
- Pedro L. Gonzalez tweeted, “DeSantis is supporting Daniel Penny and linking to his legal defense fund. This is the gold standard for a politician in these times.”
Penny surrendered to the 5th Precinct in lower Manhattan and is expected to be arraigned on Friday afternoon. If convicted, he could face 15 years in prison. The NYC medical examiner ruled Neely’s death a “homicide,” although criminal proceedings would be necessary to determine intent or culpability. Penny’s lawyers said that he acted in self-defense to protect other passengers on the subway.
