Target’s Pride Month Collection: More Than Just Rainbow-Washing
Get Ready for Rainbow-Washing
Target has just released its capsule collection for LGBT Pride Month, and it’s full of kitschy graphic tees with slogans like “Trans Pride Trans Power” and “Queer! Queer! Queer! Queer!” But what’s concerning is that these items aren’t just for adults – they’re also marketed to babies, toddlers, kids, tweens, and teens.
Propagandistic Books and Wearable Goods
Target’s collection includes books like “Bye Bye, Binary” and “The Pronoun Book” for babies and toddlers, as well as a “Pride Baby Bien Proud Body Suit” for newborns. For teens, there are items like a “Queer All Year” beanie and a “Super Queer” color-block bucket hat. But some of the items, like a romper that reads “Not A Phase,” can be concerning for adolescents going through identity exploration phases.
Exploiting Vulnerable Teens
While Target may pride itself on labeling its products with an “LGBTQ+ Owned” icon, there’s something off-kilter about corporations profiting off the backs of vulnerable teens. Children and teens deserve productive therapeutic treatment and room to safely explore, not a marketing ploy that exploits their insecurities.
Don’t just take it from me – take it from left-wing voices who coined terms like “pink capitalism” and “rainbow capitalism,” referring to brands that commercialize “pride”-themed products for profit. Target’s latest line is promoting an ideology that actively leads children to medicalize the natural insecurities they face, through the use of puberty blockers, wrong-sex hormones, and irreversible surgeries.
Let’s prioritize the mental health and well-being of our youth over corporate profits.
