President Biden Honors Medal of Valor Recipients for Outstanding Courage and Heroism
On May 17, 2023, President Joe Biden presented the Medal of Valor to nine public safety personnel, including five police officers, one deputy sheriff, and three firemen, who demonstrated remarkable bravery, promptness of action, and willingness to take personal risks in an effort to save or preserve human life. The honor was established by Congress in 2001 to recognize public safety personnel who go above and beyond the call of duty.
Two NYPD Officers Killed During 911 Call Among the Honorees
Officers Wilbert Mora and Jason Rivera, who lost their lives while protecting a mother and son from an armed man in their home, were among the honorees. Another officer, Sumit Sulan, ensured the safety of those on the scene and shot and killed the gunman, ending the deadly episode just 45 seconds after it began. The other medal recipients included Corporal Jeffrey Farmer of the Littleton, Colorado Police Department, Lieutenant Justin Hespeler of the New York City Fire Department, retired Lieutenant Jason Hickey of the New York City Fire Department, Deputy Bobby Hau Pham of the Clermont County and Ohio Sheriff’s Office, Sergeant Kendrick Simpo of the Houston, Texas Police Department, and Patrick Thornton of the New York City Fire Department.
President Biden Commends the Honorees for Their Selflessness and Bravery
During the ceremony, President Biden commended the honorees for their selflessness and bravery, stating, “You run into danger when everyone else runs away from danger. You possess a selflessness that’s literally impossible to explain. And your bravery is one that inspires.”
