Feinstein had more shingles complications than she admitted.

Sen. Dianne Feinstein’s Health Battle

Sen. Dianne Feinstein (D., Calif.), 89, has been battling shingles and its complications since February. However, a recent report from the New York Times reveals that her condition is worse than previously admitted.

Complications and Prolonged Recovery

Feinstein not only suffered from vision and balance impairments from Ramsay Hunt syndrome but also from encephalitis, a rare and debilitating complication of shingles. This added difficulty could prolong her recovery and make it difficult for her to work. Post-shingles encephalitis can leave patients with lasting memory or language problems, sleep disorders, bouts of confusion, mood disorders, headaches, and difficulties walking. Older patients tend to have the most trouble recovering, and Feinstein had already suffered substantial memory issues before this latest illness.

Memory Lapses and Calls for Resignation

Feinstein’s health battle is a problem for Senate Democrats, especially on the Judiciary Committee, where her vote is necessary to approve White House judicial nominees. Some Democrats, including Reps. Ro Khanna (Calif.) and Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (N.Y.), have called for her resignation. Concerns about her memory lapses and health are not new. A new book this month detailed how Feinstein confused one black senator for another in 2021.

Feinstein’s Response

Feinstein announced last week that she will work a lighter schedule but has refused to discuss considering early retirement. However, her recent memory lapse and denial of her prolonged absence have raised questions about her mental capacity.

Impact on Senate Democrats

Feinstein’s health battle is not only a concern for her but also for Senate Democrats. Her vote is crucial for approving White House judicial nominees, and her prolonged absence could delay the process.

Let’s hope for a speedy recovery for Sen. Feinstein.
