Migrants often get released into the country after being caught.

Breaking News: Majority of Apprehended Migrants Released into the US

What You Need to Know:

  • The number of individuals crossing into the United States has fallen to just a quarter of the 10,000 daily crossings last week.
  • However, a larger portion of them are being released into the country, according to new data from Customs and Border Protection.
  • In the five days after the May 11 lapse of Title 42, nearly 7 out of 10 illegal migrants that were processed by border agents were released.
  • One of those caught was an Afghan national whose name is on the terror watch list.

Despite the Biden administration’s claims that it would impose punishments for illegal entry, the majority of migrants are still being released into the country after apprehension. Secretary of Homeland Security Alejandro Mayorkas said the new measures would deter migrants, but the data shows that the rate of expedited removals has only increased slightly.

Deportees who try to return to the U.S. illegally can be charged with felonies and face five-year bans on legal reentry. However, the CBP data doesn’t detail how many people were put into expedited removal, but shows how many were transferred to ICE, where they might face deportation.

It’s clear that the situation at the border is still a major issue, with record numbers of apprehensions occurring last week. As the situation continues to unfold, it remains to be seen what actions the Biden administration will take to address the ongoing crisis.
