Target criticized for selling swimsuits with “extra crotch coverage” and “tuck-friendly” features for women.
Retail Giant Target Faces Backlash Over “Tuck-Friendly” Swimsuits
Target’s Pride collection has come under fire for offering female swimsuits with “extra crotch coverage” and “tuck-friendly” designs. The collection also includes Pride-themed onesies, rainbow-colored leggings, tutu skirts, and jumpers. While Target claims the swimsuits were designed to fit multiple body types and gender expressions, social media users have criticized the retailer for catering to a small minority at the expense of the majority.
Boycott Target?
Conservative commentator Matt Walsh has called for a boycott of Target over their product offerings, which he claims are worse than anything Bud Light did. Walsh tweeted, “They are selling chest binders & ‘tuck-friendly’ bathing suits for children. Target is calling our bluff. But just like any other company, they need our business. We did it with Bud Light. Now it’s Target’s turn.”
Ridicule and Controversy
Comedian Chrissie Mayr ridiculed the swimsuits, saying, “Thanks to @Target I found the perfect swimsuit for creeping out all the women and children at the pool this summer. Can’t wait to tuck my c*** into this little number while sipping a Bud Light!” Mayr also told Fox News, “No real woman would be caught dead in that swimsuit, it’s hideous. It’s exactly what a dude pretending to be a woman would wear.”
The controversy follows Adidas using a male model to promote a new women’s swimsuit, a decision that also earned condemnation, including from former University of Kentucky swimming star Riley Gaines. Gaines tweeted, “I don’t understand why companies are voluntarily doing this to themselves. They could have at least said the suit is ‘unisex,’ but they didn’t because it’s about erasing women. Ever wondered why we hardly see this go the other way? Women’s swimsuits aren’t accessorized with a bulge.”
Target’s Response
Target has not yet responded to the controversy, but it remains to be seen whether the backlash will affect the retailer’s sales.
