NY County voters wrongly labeled as Democrats on IDs.
Printing Error Identifies All Nassau County Voters as Democrats
Accusations of Election Sabotage Ahead of Primaries
A printing company’s botch-up has caused all voters in Nassau County, New York, to be identified as Democrats on their voter ID cards, regardless of their political affiliation. This has triggered accusations of “sabotaging elections” ahead of the upcoming primaries scheduled for June.
- Nearly a million voters in the county received their voter ID cards on Tuesday.
- Voters supporting Republicans, Independents, or another political party were surprised to see themselves identified as Democrats on the cards.
- Nassau County Executive Bruce Blakeman said, “There’s a lot of confusion, there’s a lot of people emotionally upset about this.”
Blakeman, a Republican, is blaming Rochester-based Phoenix Graphics, the printing company hired by Nassau County’s Board of Elections to print the voter ID cards. However, Phoenix Graphics called it an “isolated event” that was the result of a human error.
This is not the first time Phoenix Graphics has made such a mistake. In 2020, the printing firm messed up absentee ballots for 99,000 voters in Brooklyn.
The incident has been slammed by the campaign for Kari Lake (R-Ariz.), who is running for the post of Arizona Governor. “This is just their blanket excuse for sabotaging elections and hoping nobody calls them on it,” the campaign said in a May 21 tweet.
Since New York is a closed primary state, voters registered as belonging to a party are not allowed to vote for any other party. As such, if a GOP supporter is identified as a Democrat on their voter ID card, they will not be able to vote in the Republican primary.
This printing error has caused a lot of confusion and frustration among voters in Nassau County. It remains to be seen how this will affect the upcoming primaries.
