All voters in NY County are registered as Democrats on their voter IDs.

Printing Error Identifies All Nassau County Voters as Democrats

Accusations of Election Sabotage Ahead of Primaries

A printing error by Rochester-based Phoenix Graphics has caused all voters in Nassau County, New York, to be identified as Democrats on their voter ID cards, regardless of their political affiliation. The error has triggered accusations of election sabotage ahead of the upcoming primaries scheduled for June.

According to NBC, nearly a million voters in the county have received their voter ID cards, with many Republicans, independents, and supporters of other political parties surprised to see themselves identified as Democrats on the cards.

Nassau County Executive Bruce Blakeman, a Republican, has received numerous phone calls from upset voters who are confused and emotionally distressed by the error. Blakeman is blaming Phoenix Graphics, the company hired by Nassau County’s Board of Elections to print the voter ID cards.

Phoenix Graphics has apologized for the mistake, calling it an “isolated event” resulting from human error. However, this isn’t the first time the printing company has made such a mistake. In 2020, Phoenix Graphics messed up absentee ballots for 99,000 voters in Brooklyn.

The incident has drawn criticism from Kari Lake, the 2022 Republican candidate for Arizona governor, who has challenged the outcome of her race. Her campaign slammed the incident, saying, “This is just their blanket excuse for sabotaging elections and hoping nobody calls them on it.”

Impact on Primaries

Since New York is a closed primary state, voters registered as belonging to a party aren’t allowed to vote for any other party. As such, the printing error could have a significant impact on the upcoming primaries, with many voters unable to cast their vote for their preferred candidate.
