Bud Light sales drop for 6th week due to Dylan Mulvaney scandal.
Anheuser-Busch’s Bud Light Sales Continue to Decline
The sales of Bud Light, one of the most popular beers in the United States, have been on a steady decline for the past six weeks. According to a report by consulting company Bump Williams, retail sales of Bud Light decreased by 28% during the week beginning May 8, 2022, compared to the same period last year. This comes after a 23.6% decline in sales for the week ending on May 6.
Coors Light and Miller Lite See Increase in Sales
On the other hand, Coors Light and Miller Lite have seen an increase in sales during the second week of May. Coors Light sales increased by 17%, while Miller Lite sales increased by about 15%.
Backlash Over Personalized Bud Light Can to Transgender Influencer
The decline in Bud Light sales began when Anheuser-Busch sent a personalized Bud Light can to transgender influencer Dylan Mulvaney, who made two posts with the can. This caused backlash within the company’s customer base, leading to senior marketing officials being put on leave and the company cutting ties with a third-party ad agency.
Anheuser-Busch Hires Lobbying Firm to Rehabilitate Image
In an effort to rehabilitate its image, Anheuser-Busch has reportedly hired a lobbying firm with GOP roots, Origin Advocacy. However, the fallout with the transgender influencer may cost the company its Corporate Equality Index score of 100, a grade given by the Human Rights Campaign, one of the leading LGBT advocacy groups.
Mulvaney, the transgender influencer, claimed to have been worn down by the backlash stemming from the partnership with Bud Light. The advertising collaboration kicked off last month, greatly increasing the influencer’s public profile.
