Explosive chemical shipment vanishes mysteriously.
30 Tons of Explosive Chemical Missing in Transit
A large shipment of ammonium nitrate, a chemical commonly used in agricultural fertilizer and explosives, has gone missing while being transported by train from Wyoming to California. The shipment, which weighed roughly 30 tons, disappeared in mid-April and has yet to be found, according to The New York Times.
The incident has sparked concern on social media, with some pointing out that only two tons of ammonium nitrate were used in the deadly 1995 Oklahoma City bombing. However, Union Pacific, the rail company responsible for the shipment, has stated that its inquiry is still in its early stages and does not suspect malicious or criminal activity.
Possible Leak in Transit
A spokesperson for explosives manufacturer Dyno Nobel, which informed federal authorities of the missing shipment, stated that the railcar was sealed when it left Wyoming and the seals were still intact when it arrived in California. The company believes that a leak through the bottom gate on the railcar may have developed in transit, and the railcar has been sent back to Wyoming for inspection.
Despite the missing shipment, Union Pacific spokesperson Kristen South has stated that there is no cause for concern regarding health and environmental risks if the material spilled out of the train over a great distance. According to South, the fertilizer is designed for ground application and quick soil absorption, and any release during transportation should pose no risk to public health or the environment.
Inquiries Underway
Inquiries into the missing shipment are being conducted by federal, state, and company officials. The incident has raised questions about the security of transporting hazardous materials and the potential risks involved.
