Nordstrom closures in San Francisco result in loss of almost 400 jobs.
Nordstrom to Cut Nearly 400 Jobs in San Francisco
Close to 400 jobs are set to be cut in the San Francisco area following Nordstrom’s decision to close two locations over “dynamics” of the city’s downtown area, where retail theft has ravaged storefronts.
The closure of the retail giant’s Market Street locations was announced earlier this month, and a total of 379 jobs at the two stores will be cut, according to a report citing WARN letters sent to California’s Employment Development Department.
At least 333 workers at the Westfield San Francisco Centre shopping mall will lose their current work, and 46 will be terminated at the Nordstrom Rack Market Street a few doors away, the report noted.
Not every employee affected by the coming layoffs will completely lose their positions within the Seattle-based retailer, according to the WARN letters sent by Nordstrom Human Resources Director Meghan Hannes.
“Certain employees will be offered the opportunity to transfer to other Nordstrom locations,” Hannes stated.
The Westfield San Francisco Centre layoffs will go into effect Aug. 27, and the Rack location’s layoffs will begin July 1, according to the report.
No union representation is reported for employees at either location.
“We’ve spent more than 35 years serving customers in downtown San Francisco, building relationships with them and investing in the local community,” a memo from Chief Stores Officer Jamie Nordstrom read.
“But as many of you know, the dynamics of the downtown San Francisco market have changed dramatically over the past several years, impacting customer foot traffic to our stores and our ability to operate successfully.”
Impact of Retail Theft on San Francisco
The decision to close Nordstrom’s San Francisco locations comes after years of retail theft that has ravaged storefronts in the city’s downtown area. This has had a significant impact on customer foot traffic and the ability of retailers to operate successfully.
Opportunities for Affected Employees
While many employees will lose their current positions, certain employees will be offered the opportunity to transfer to other Nordstrom locations. The company has not yet determined who will be offered these opportunities.
