Uncle Roger gives a glimpse of life under Chinese Communism.
Why Uncle Roger’s Joke Matters for America’s Future
Uncle Roger, the British-Malaysian comedian and internet personality, has become a sensation for his hilarious critiques of Westerners’ attempts at cooking Asian food. But his recent joke about Chinese President Xi Jinping and Communist China has landed him in hot water. This incident sheds light on why Americans should care about China’s rise to power.
Uncle Roger’s popularity has skyrocketed over the last couple of years, with a combined 20.8 million followers on YouTube, Instagram, and TikTok. However, things took a turn when he criticized President Xi and China during one of his stand-up comedy shows. He joked about China being a “good country” and made fun of a man’s Huawei phone, saying it was listening to everything he was saying and repeating, “Long live President Xi.” Uncle Roger then asked who in the audience was from Taiwan and brazenly quipped, “Not a real country, not a real country,” and, “I hope one day you rejoin the motherland. One China!”
His joke immediately went viral and caught the attention of Twitter’s critics of China. However, it also caught the attention of Beijing’s censorship brigade. Uncle Roger’s Weibo and Bilibili social media accounts were suspended, and he lost access to hundreds of thousands of subscribers. This incident is not an isolated one,
