What Memorial Day Means to Americans
What would you say to the family of a fallen service member?
Memorial Day is more than just a day off work or a chance to fire up the grill. It’s a day to remember the brave men and women who gave their lives to defend the freedoms we hold dear.

We took to the National Mall in Washington, D.C., to ask locals and tourists what Memorial Day means to them and what message they have for the families of America’s fallen heroes.
Messages of Gratitude and Remembrance
- “It’s really the recognition of the lives that were lost for our freedoms here,” said one woman from California. “It’s a day of reverence.”
- “I think it’s a time to remember those who came before us and what they sacrificed so that we can have all that we have here today,” added another woman.
- “It’s a day that we can remember those that gave it all so that we can have the luxury of being able to choose how we want to live,” according to one man.
- “The families who lose loved ones in service to this country carry a weight that must be honored by every American,” said a man touring the monuments.
- “No matter who we are or where we are, we have a chance to live together because your family gave the greatest sacrifice for us to be able to live together,” he added.
- “You’re in my thoughts, and thank you for the sacrifice that you, as a family, made,” said one woman. “I wish that those sacrifices didn’t have to happen, but I’m grateful.”
Let us all take a moment to honor the fallen and their families, and to remember the sacrifices that have made our country great.
