Riley Gaines commends cycling group for prioritizing fairness by banning males from competing in female category.

Former Swimming Champion Praises British Cycling for Prioritizing Fairness

Female athletes have been fighting for fairness in sports for years, and it seems that their voices are finally being heard. Riley Gaines, a former swimming champion, recently praised British Cycling for announcing a ban on males competing in the female category. She credited the organization with “prioritizing fairness” and called on other governing bodies to follow suit.

The new cycling policy was made to “safeguard the fairness of competition,” according to The Daily Mail. The change includes making the current men’s category an “open” category where trans-identifying male cyclists can compete against other men, while the female category is just for those who were born female.

British Cycling Chief Executive Jon Dutton said, “Our new policies are the product of a robust nine-month review process, which we know will have a very real-world impact for our community both now and in the future.”

The review concluded that “even with the suppression of testosterone, trans women who transition post-puberty retain a performance advantage.”

While some trans-identifying male cyclists have criticized the new policy, female athletes like Gaines are celebrating this step towards fairness in sports.
