Hugo Gurdon believes the debt limit deal should pass with a strong majority.

Washington Examiner Editor-in-Chief Expects Debt Ceiling Deal to Pass Congress

As the countdown continues toward the nation heading into economic default, Washington Examiner Editor-in-Chief Hugo Gurdon expects the tentative deal reached between House Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) and President Joe Biden will be approved by Congress.

On Friday, Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen announced the deadline to reach a deal before the country could no longer pay its bills would be extended to June 5.

“I think it will get done. It is always possible that the Republicans will snatch defeat from the jaws of victory. They’ve done it before, and maybe it’ll get torpedoed. But this would be a serious fault by the Republicans. The truth is that they have won this,” Gurdon told Fox News on Monday.

Gurdon pointed to Biden finally deciding to negotiate after insisting for months that he would not negotiate and to House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-NY), who wanted food stamp recipients to receive benefits without having a job.

“The Democrats have been in retreat throughout this, and Republicans have clearly won the PR battle, and that’s a first for them,” Gurdon added.

The key now, Gurdon said, is for McCarthy to approach this without taking a massive victory lap.

“He has to say to his own caucus, ‘Look, we got a lot here, and we won,’ but he can’t do it to the extent that it’s going to alienate a few Democratic votes that he’s likely to need. He is going to lose some votes on the Right amongst the Freedom Caucus, and he has to make those up in order to get the majority by winning over some Democrats.”

Overall, Gurdon expects the deal to pass with “a substantial majority, not just a razor-thin one.”

The House is scheduled to vote on Wednesday.
