U.S. Citizen Arrested for Threatening to Kill Republican Senator
A U.S. citizen living in Thailand was arrested at the Hartsfield–Jackson Atlanta International Airport last week for threatening to assault and murder Republican North Carolina Sen. Thom Tillis almost two years ago.
The U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) announced on Tuesday that Eric Charles Welton was charged with making threats against Tillis in September 2021, as well as against U.S. Marines and other people working at the U.S. Consulate in Chiang Mai, Thailand, in late 2022.
“It is unacceptable to make violent threats against anyone. And when threats are directed at elected officials or members of the armed forces, it can impact their ability to serve our country effectively,” FBI Special Agent Robert M. DeWitt said Tuesday.
According to an indictment unsealed on May 26, Welton made seven phone calls to the offices of Sen. Tillis and Sen. Richard Burr (R-N.C.). During one call, Welton suggested he might travel to Tillis’ office space and kill everyone there.
“Maybe I just gotta [sic] go down there to 310 New Bern Avenue and just kill everybody I see,” Welton allegedly said.
Welton also described a desire to “mow” the “whole [expletive] state down” and referenced living in a war zone created by former President Donald Trump.
“The last thing you want is me crawling through your [expletive] back yard,” Welton allegedly said. He also allegedly told the staff member to tell this to “your little Thom boy.”
Welton also made threats against U.S. Marines and other people working at the U.S. Consulate in Chiang Mai, Thailand.
Unacceptable Behavior
Threatening violence against anyone is unacceptable, but when it’s directed at elected officials or members of the armed forces, it can have serious consequences. The DOJ and FBI take these threats seriously and will prosecute those who make them to the fullest extent of the law.
