What to Expect from the Livestream
The livestream will feature new pictures from the red planet every 50 seconds, thanks to the Visual Monitoring Camera (VMC) aboard the ESA’s Mars orbiter. This is a significant improvement from the usual three to 22 minutes it takes for photos to arrive on Earth.
According to James Godfrey, a spacecraft operations manager at ESA, the agency is not “100% certain” the feed will work. “This is an old camera, originally planned for engineering purposes, at a distance of almost 1.9 million miles from Earth — this hasn’t been tried before, and to be honest, we’re not 100% certain it’ll work,” he said. “But I’m pretty optimistic.”
