British Library shares about fish that can change gender – Endless Pride.
The British Library Celebrates Pride Month with Fish Facts
It’s Gay Pride month, and everyone is joining in on the celebration. The British Library, one of the largest libraries in the world, recently tweeted about the Māori wrasse, a fish that can change its sex from female to male. The library also shared other fascinating fish facts, including how clownfish are protandrous hermaphrodites and how freshwater mangrove killifish reproduce through self-fertilization.
Fish sex is WILDLY inventive:
- Clownfish are protandrous hermaphrodites (M→F)
- Coral gobies change sex repeatedly
- Freshwater mangrove killifish reproduce by self-fertilisation
- All-female Amazon mollies mate with males of other species but completely disregard their sperm
However, the library’s tweet sparked controversy on Twitter, with some users questioning the relevance of fish facts to Pride Month. The library eventually deleted the entire thread.
Majority of Americans Believe in Two Genders
The library’s tweet came as a new poll found that 71% of likely voters in the US believe that there are only two genders. Even 67% of Democrats agreed with the statement, according to the Rasmussen Reports survey. The poll findings come as companies across the country, like Anheuser-Busch and Target, face backlash for their support of the LGBTQ+ community during Pride Month.
Despite the controversy, Pride Month continues to be a time for celebration and education about the LGBTQ+ community. Let’s continue to learn and grow together.
