Vodafone and Hutchison reveal UK mobile merger.
Vodafone and CK Hutchison Unveil Merger of British Operations
After months of speculation, Vodafone and CK Hutchison have finally announced their merger of British operations. The move is set to create the UK’s largest mobile operator, with a combined investment of $14 billion in the country.
“Together, we will have the scale needed to deliver a best-in-class 5G network for the UK, transforming mobile services for our customers and opening up new opportunities for businesses across the length and breadth of the UK.”
The combined group will be led by current Vodafone UK boss Ahmed Essam, with Darren Purkis taking on the role of finance chief. The merger will give the new operator around 27 million customers, overtaking BT’s EE and VM O2.
While the deal is set to face intense scrutiny from regulators, the two companies have pledged to invest £11 billion ($14 billion) in the UK over the next decade to create one of Europe’s most advanced standalone 5G networks.
