Border Patrol Agents report a ‘1000% surge’ in illegal immigrants from countries like China and Afghanistan.
Border Patrol Records 1000% Increase in Illegal Immigration from China and Afghanistan
Border Patrol Chief Raul Ortiz has reported a shocking increase in illegal immigration from countries like China and Afghanistan. In fact, agents have seen a more than 1000% increase in attempts to enter the United States from these countries. Ortiz, who is retiring next month after more than three decades with the agency, shared the latest data on Twitter on June 9th.
“While we work diligently to repatriate migrants from these countries, we still have challenges with countries’ governments to get working programs in place to repatriate all those we apprehend,” said Ortiz.
Other Countries Affected
But it’s not just China and Afghanistan. Ortiz’s post also revealed similar increases from other nations, including Algeria, Djibouti, the Dominican Republic, Egypt, Ethiopia, Mauritania, Paraguay, and Vietnam.
Official Data from Border Patrol
According to official data from Border Patrol, agents recorded 342 encounters with immigrants from China in fiscal year 2021. That figure rose to 1,987 in fiscal year 2022 and skyrocketed to 9,753 in the first seven months of fiscal year 2023.
Reasons for the Increase
The rise in illegal immigration from China comes amid increasing tensions between the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) and Washington over Beijing’s aggressive actions toward Taiwan, its alleged surveillance of Americans, and its documented human rights abuses. China expert Gordon Chang believes that the problems in Chinese society are severe, leading to extreme pessimism among people in their 20s about the future of their country.
Biden Admin Touts Decline in Illegal Border Crossings
Despite concerns that the number of border crossings would surge after Title 42 came to an end, the Biden administration has reported a decline in illegal border crossings. However, the record-high 2.2 million illegal migrant encounters at the southern U.S. border in 2022 show that there is still much work to be done.
“We still have a lot of work to do to secure our border and keep our communities safe,” said Ortiz.
