Demi Lovato switched back to using female pronouns as ‘they/them’ was too tiring.
Pop singer and actor Demi Lovato returns to using “she/her” pronouns
Pop singer and actor Demi Lovato recently announced that she will be going back to using “she/her” pronouns, after previously identifying as nonbinary and using “they/them” pronouns. Lovato explained that constantly having to educate people and explain her pronoun choice became exhausting.
“I constantly had to educate people and explain why I identified with those pronouns,” Lovato reportedly told GQ Spain. “It was absolutely exhausting.”
Despite her decision, Lovato emphasized the importance of spreading awareness and understanding about gender identity.
“I just got tired. But for that very reason I know that it is important to continue spreading the word,” she added.
While Lovato has found herself feeling “more feminine,” she still desires gender-neutral spaces. She highlighted the challenges she faces in everyday situations, such as using public restrooms and filling out forms that only offer binary gender options.
“I face this every day. For example, in public toilets. Having to access the women’s bathroom, even though I don’t completely identify with it,” the “Cool for the Summer” singer explained. “Or it also happens when filling out forms, such as government documents or any other where you have to specify your gender.”
“You only have two options, male and female,” she added. “And I feel like none of that makes sense to me.”
Lovato acknowledged that using pronouns correctly can be a learning experience for everyone and emphasized the importance of respect.
“I think what’s important is, like, nobody’s perfect,” Lovato said in a podcast interview. “Everyone messes up pronouns at some point, and especially when people are learning. It’s just all about respect.”
