Francis Suarez backs nationwide abortion ban, aligns with 2024 contenders.
The Latest 2024 Republican Candidate for President Supports Nationwide Abortion Ban
Miami Mayor Francis Suarez, the newest contender for the 2024 Republican presidential nomination, has made his stance on abortion clear. In an interview with the Wall Street Journal, Suarez expressed his support for a nationwide ban on abortion, with certain exceptions.
Suarez explained that he would back a ban that allows for abortions up to 15 weeks, but with exceptions for cases involving the life of the mother, rape, and incest. This is the first time he has publicly shared his opinion on abortion since launching his presidential campaign.
Joining the Ranks of Pence and Scott
By taking this stance, Suarez aligns himself with other prominent Republicans such as former Vice President Mike Pence and Senator Tim Scott (R-SC), who share similar views on abortion. The upcoming 2024 election will be the first since the Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade, removing nationwide protection for the procedure.
In the Senate, Senator Lindsey Graham (R-SC) has proposed a nationwide ban on abortion at 15 weeks. While some Senate Republicans support Graham’s efforts, there is opposition within the caucus, notably from Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY).
Meanwhile, a majority of Americans agree with Suarez’s position on banning abortion after a certain period. According to a June Gallup poll, only 37% of the country believes abortion should be legal in the second trimester or after 15 weeks, while 55% say it should be illegal.
The Democratic National Committee wasted no time in launching attacks on Suarez following his announcement. They labeled him “another contender in the race for the MAGA base” and shared news of his abortion stance online.
