Elissa Slotkin leads James Craig in 2024 Michigan Senate race: Poll.

Rep. Elissa Slotkin Holds Slight Lead in Michigan Senate Race

Rep. Elissa Slotkin (D-MI) is currently leading the race for the seat being vacated by retiring Sen. Debbie Stabenow (D-MI), with a slight advantage over her Republican opponent, former Chief of the Detroit Police Department James Craig.

New Poll Shows Slotkin Ahead

A recent EPIC-MRA poll reveals that Slotkin has a 1-point lead over Craig. Among the 600 likely November 2024 voters surveyed, 40% expressed support for Slotkin, while 39% backed Craig. Approximately 21% of voters remained undecided or refused to make a selection.

Favorability Ratings

Slotkin ranked higher in favorability among respondents, with 19% of “total favor,” while Craig held 16%.

Introduction to the Candidates

Interestingly, 53% of the surveyed voters had never heard of Slotkin, and 57% had never heard of Craig.

Slotkin, who currently serves as a congresswoman representing the Lansing area, officially launched her Senate campaign in February. She believes that Michigan needs “a new generation of leaders that thinks differently” and “works harder.”

On the other hand, Craig has not yet decided whether he will enter the 2024 Senate race. He stated that he does not have a specific timeline for making a decision.

Stabenow’s Retirement

Last month, Sen. Debbie Stabenow announced that she would not seek reelection in 2024, expressing her desire to “pass the torch to the next generations of young leaders.” Stabenow served two terms in the House and became Michigan’s first female senator in 2001.

Aside from Slotkin and Craig, there are other candidates vying for Stabenow’s open seat. Two declared Republicans, State Board of Education member and registered nurse Nikki Snyder and businessman Michael Hoover, are also in the race.

Furthermore, former Democratic state Rep. Leslie Love, Dearborn businessman Nasser Beydoun, and attorney Zack Burns of Ann Arbor are among the other Democratic candidates competing for the Senate seat.

Slotkin emphasized the need for change in leadership, stating in a video announcing her run, “We all know America is going through something right now. We seem to be living crisis to crisis, but there are certain things that should be really simple.”
