Defending Champion Matt Fitzpatrick Scores Hole-in-One at U.S. Open

The roar of the crowd made Matt Fitzpatrick realize he had achieved something incredible during the second round of the U.S. Open on Friday. The defending champion, known for his magical shots, proved he still had the touch when he delivered a perfect shot onto the green at the Los Angeles Country Club.

The crowd’s cheers caught Fitzpatrick’s attention as he glanced away after the drive. To his surprise, the ball slid seamlessly into the hole, resulting in a hole-in-one at the par-3 15th. This made Fitzpatrick the first defending champion to achieve such a feat at the U.S. Open.

“As soon as I hit it, I thought it had a good chance of going close anyway. Dead center. My hand was a bit sore afterward, I’ll be honest, after all the high fiving,” he told reporters.

However, Fitzpatrick’s joy was short-lived as he recorded a double bogey on the par-4 17th, ending the day far from the top of the leaderboard with an even par 70.

“I feel like if I can get the driver going, I can shoot a really good score. But I couldn’t drive it worse at the minute,” he said.

In the opening round, Frenchman Matthieu Pavon and American Sam Burns also recorded aces on the 15th hole. This year’s U.S. Open marks only the second time in the tournament’s history that there have been three or more aces, the first being in 1989 at Oak Hill.
