Raskin appoints FBI leader for Biden ‘bribery’ probe, seeks committee briefing details.
House Oversight Committee Member Reveals Lead Investigator in Biden Bribery Allegations
Ranking House Oversight Committee member Jamie Raskin (D-MD) has made a significant disclosure regarding President Joe Biden’s alleged bribery scheme. In a letter addressed to FBI Director Christopher Wray, Raskin not only revealed the name of the lead investigator but also requested that the entire committee be briefed on the investigation.
The letter, obtained by NBC, specifically asked the FBI to provide information from a June 5 briefing to the full committee. This briefing, attended by Oversight Committee Chairman Rep. James Comer (R-KY) and Raskin, included crucial context surrounding the allegations outlined in an FD-1023 form.
Request for Additional Information
Raskin emphasized the importance of the briefing and the need for the committee members to have access to the additional non-classified information provided. He urged the FBI to reiterate this information in writing for the benefit of all committee members.
One of the key revelations from the briefing, highlighted by Raskin in the letter, was the name of the attorney assigned to lead the investigation.
Allegations in the FD-1023 Form
Raskin’s letter explained that the FD-1023 form contained allegations made by a confidential human source (CHS) during an interview with the FBI. These allegations revolved around conversations the CHS had with Biden, suggesting his involvement in a criminal bribery scheme related to a Ukrainian energy company.
Raskin clarified that the CHS acknowledged the possibility of exaggeration in the allegations and refrained from offering an opinion on their veracity.
Highlighted Points from the Briefing
Raskin drew attention to several key points discussed during the briefing:
- In January 2020, Attorney General William Barr appointed Scott Brady, the U.S. Attorney for the Western District of Pennsylvania, to review allegations made by Rudy Giuliani regarding Biden’s involvement in a corruption scheme.
- Brady led a team of prosecutors and FBI agents in investigating the allegations, which included reviewing suspicious activity reports and interviewing the CHS.
- Most of the information provided by the CHS had already been shared by Giuliani.
- The investigation concluded after eight months, with no further tasks remaining. The FBI, Brady, and high-level Justice Department officials agreed that there was insufficient evidence to warrant further investigation.
- During the briefing, the FBI did not suggest an ongoing investigation into bribery allegations.
Raskin expressed deep concern over the inconsistency between recent public statements and the statements made by the FBI during the June 5, 2023, briefing.
Differing Conclusions and Pushback
Raskin and Comer had contrasting conclusions following the briefing. Raskin believed that the meeting eliminated the need for further investigation, while Comer argued that it highlighted the necessity for additional scrutiny.
Oversight Republicans strongly disputed Raskin’s claims, labeling them as lies.
Comer stated, “It doesn’t matter how many times Ranking Member Raskin repeats the lie, it’s still a lie.” He emphasized that the information in the FD-1023 form did not originate from Giuliani and that the form was forwarded to the U.S. Attorney in Delaware for further investigation, as confirmed by former Attorney General William Barr. Comer also highlighted Director Wray’s acknowledgment that the form was related to an ongoing investigation.
Comer concluded by asserting the importance of addressing the serious allegations in the Biden bribery case and ensuring transparency and accountability for the American people. He vowed that the Oversight Committee would remain focused on this goal, undeterred by the lies and distractions from Democrats.
