Shocking twist: Woman awakens at her own funeral, but 7 days later, family faces an even nastier surprise.
76-Year-Old Woman Who Surprised Relatives by Knocking on Her Coffin During Wake Dies After 7 Days in Intensive Care
A remarkable and unexpected turn of events has taken place in Ecuador. A 76-year-old woman, who had been declared dead and shocked her loved ones by knocking on her coffin during her wake, has sadly passed away after spending seven days in intensive care.
Gilberto Barbera Montoya, the woman’s son, revealed that doctors at the state hospital where she was taken after the incident confirmed her death on Friday evening.
The Ecuadorian health ministry has issued a statement confirming that Bella Montoya died from an ischemic stroke after spending a week in intensive care. While she was under “permanent surveillance,” no further details about the medical investigation surrounding the case have been provided.
Barbera Montoya expressed his frustration at not receiving any official report from the authorities regarding the medical explanation of what happened. He warned that things “are not going to stay like this.”

Furthermore, a formal complaint has been lodged by the deceased woman’s sister, seeking to identify the doctor who initially declared her dead.
According to reports, Bella Montoya woke up and began knocking on her coffin lid on June 9, after spending five hours inside the box at a funeral home in Babahoyo, approximately 129 miles southwest of Quito.
The remains of Montoya, a retired nurse, have been returned to the same funeral home where she regained consciousness.
Her son informed the AP that she will be laid to rest in a public cemetery.
A technical committee has been established to review the procedures for issuing death certificates at the hospital, as announced by the country’s ministry of health last week.
