Barr willing to testify against Trump in documents case if requested.

Former Attorney General Bill Barr Willing to Testify Against Trump

Former Attorney General Bill Barr has made a surprising statement, saying that he would be willing to testify against former President Donald Trump in the ongoing case related to Trump’s handling of classified documents while in office.

Trump is facing accusations of mishandling classified documents, including those classified as “top secret.” He has dismissed the investigation as partisan and a witch hunt.

Now, Barr, who has already been critical of Trump, has expressed his willingness to testify if asked by Special Counsel Jack Smith, who is leading the federal action against Trump.

“If they called me in as a witness, of course I would testify,” Barr said during a recent appearance on CBS’s “Face the Nation.” However, he does not expect to be called in for such testimony.

Barr, who was once a Trump ally and served as his attorney general, has distanced himself from Trump since the 2020 election. He has even stated that he is “adamantly against” another Trump presidency.

During his appearance on CBS, Barr also rejected Trump’s claims of widespread voter fraud and criticized him for provoking the events of January 6th at the Capitol.

Barr emphasized that Trump had “no legal right” to the documents in question and praised the government’s efforts to retrieve them quietly and with respect.

Trump has argued that his conduct was protected under the Presidential Records Act, but Special Counsel Smith is pursuing charges under the Espionage Act instead.

Barr strongly disagreed with Trump’s legal position, calling it absurd and pointing out that the purpose of the Presidential Records Act is to prevent presidents from taking official documents out of the White House.

“The whole purpose of the statute… was to stop presidents from taking official documents out of the White House—it was passed after Watergate. It restricted what a President can take,” Barr explained.

He further criticized Trump’s argument, stating, “They’re not even arguing that it’s purely private. What they’re saying is the President just has sweeping discretion to say they are [purely private] even though they squarely don’t fall within the definition. It’s an absurd argument.”
