Midwest teachers share tips for smoothly transitioning children

Midwestern Teachers Discuss Gender Transitioning in Online Chatroom

Several dozen Midwestern teachers gathered in an online chatroom this week to discuss strategies for supporting their students’ gender transitions without involving parents. The workshop, hosted by the Midwest and Plains Equity Assistance Center (MAP), brought together around 30 educators from states like Iowa, Michigan, Illinois, and Ohio. The Daily Mail gained access to the four-hour session, which focused on reviewing new educational statutes aimed at addressing marginalization and problematic policies.

Efforts to Conceal Gender Transitioning from Parents

  • Kimberly Martin, DEI coordinator for Royal Oaks Schools in Michigan, shared her efforts to hide elements of social transition, such as name changes, from parents. She mentioned working with the record-keeping system to prevent certain screens from being visible to parents.

Activism and Ethical Dilemmas

  • Jennifer Haglund, counselor for Ames Community Schools in Iowa, criticized Iowa Governor Kim Reynolds for signing a law that prohibits males from competing on female sports teams. Haglund also expressed her personal activism for LGBTQ causes, stating that her own code of ethics sometimes conflicts with the law.

Subversive Approaches for Trans Youth

  • According to Shea Martin, an Ohio-based teacher and contributor to the far-Left blog Radical Teacher, the stakes are high for trans youth. Martin emphasized the need for subversive and quiet actions to ensure that trans kids receive the support they require.

Controversy Surrounding Gender Ideology

  • Gender ideology has become a contentious issue in the United States. A recent poll by the Public Religion Research Institute revealed that 65% of Americans believe there are only two genders, with support for the gender binary increasing across various demographics. Additionally, a plurality of respondents opposed teaching transgenderism in K-12 education.

Legislation and National Debate

  • Numerous laws have been introduced in red and purple states to restrict sexually explicit drag performances, ban books with explicit sexual content from school libraries, prevent males from participating in girls’ and women’s sports, and prohibit minors from accessing cross-sex hormones or body modification surgeries. These laws have been criticized as “anti-LGBTQ” by activist groups like the ACLU and the Human Rights Campaign, fueling a heated national debate.

About the Midwest and Plains Equity Assistance Center

  • MAP, part of the Great Lakes Equity Center, operates in 13 states and covers over 7,000 school districts and more than 11 million students. The organization has received federal funding under Title IV of the 1964 Civil Rights Act, with a recent grant of over $8 million from the Department of Education.
