Biden adds AI experts meeting to California tour.

President Joe Biden to Meet with AI Experts and Researchers in San Francisco

President Joe Biden is set to meet with a group of artificial intelligence experts and researchers on Tuesday in San Francisco. This meeting comes as the administration races to address questions and fears surrounding the new technology.

Biden traveled to California on Monday, where he delivered climate-focused remarks in Palo Alto alongside Gov. Gavin Newsom (D-CA). He also attended several campaign events, including a closed-door fundraiser, later that evening.

Recent AI Initiatives by the Biden White House

In recent weeks, the Biden White House has introduced several AI initiatives. These include a comprehensive “Blueprint for an AI Bill of Rights” and an executive order that directs the federal government to “root out bias” in both existing and new AI tools. Additionally, the administration has invested $360 million to establish 18 National AI Research Institutes.

“AI is a top priority for the President and his team. Generative AI tools have seen significant advancements in the past few months, and we are determined to address the most current challenges. That’s why the President and Vice President summoned the leading CEOs to the White House on such short notice. We want to stay ahead of the problem and tackle it with urgency,” said a White House official ahead of Tuesday’s meeting.

“The White House Chief of Staff office is overseeing a process to rapidly develop decisive actions we can take over the coming weeks,” they added. “White House principals have been meeting 2-3 times a week to discuss this issue, in addition to the ongoing daily work being done across the White House and agencies. White House officials are also working on securing commitments from leading AI companies to combat challenges from both the government and the private sector.”

The meeting will also be attended by representatives from Stanford University, the University of California, Berkeley, the Allen Institute for Artificial Intelligence, the Center for Human Technology, and other industry groups.

Concerns Surrounding AI and Misinformation

Biden’s recent support for AI has faced criticism as the technology has increasingly been used to spread misinformation online.

“We remain concerned about the rise of deepfake videos and manipulated images on social media platforms,” said White House spokeswoman Robyn Patterson, referring to a deepfake incident that falsely depicted an attack on the Pentagon. “As the technology for creating fake videos and images improves, it’s crucial for the media and the public to be aware of this trend, which we expect to grow.”
