Biden optimistic about US-China relations, Republicans dissent.
President Biden Optimistic About US-China Relations
President Joe Biden expressed his belief on Monday that relations between the United States and China are on the right trail. He also suggested that progress was made during Secretary of State Antony Blinken’s rare trip to Beijing.
“We’re on the right trail here,” Biden stated regarding U.S.-China relations. When asked about the progress made, he confidently replied, “It’s been made.”
Biden also commended Blinken, saying, “he did a hell of a job.”
However, Congressional Republicans were less enthusiastic about Blinken’s trip to China. They suggested that the secretary of state undermined efforts to put pressure on China.
“The Biden administration’s weak actions on the global stage continue to embolden the CCP,” expressed Rep. Elise Stefanik (R., N.Y.) said.
Rep. Mike Gallagher (R., Wis.) criticized the Biden administration for not demonstrating its willingness to confront China militarily.
“Engagement disconnected from a robust military deterrent? I’m not sure what it will actually achieve,” Gallagher said.
While China and the United States agreed to stabilize their intense rivalry to avoid conflict, no major breakthrough was achieved.
