Trump criticizes DOJ for lenient Hunter Biden plea deal, calls it a minor traffic ticket.
Former President Donald Trump Reacts to Hunter Biden’s Plea Deal
Former President Donald Trump was incensed by reports of Hunter Biden reaching a plea deal with federal prosecutors Tuesday.
The 53-year-old son of President Joe Biden will plead guilty to two tax crimes and admit to the facts of a gun charge in a deal negotiated with Delaware U.S. Attorney David Weiss. The deal means Biden will plead guilty to misdemeanors for failing to pay about $1.2 million in taxes in 2017 and 2018. He is not expected to face any jail time, leading Trump to lash out at the Biden administration for seemingly giving the president’s son a slap on the wrist.
“Wow! The corrupt Biden DOJ just cleared up hundreds of years of criminal liability by giving Hunter Biden a mere traffic ticket,” Trump said on Truth Social. “Our system is BROKEN!”
Sources told The Washington Post that prosecutors will recommend two years of probation for Biden, and he will enter a diversion program upon admitting the illegal purchase of a firearm in 2018, meaning he will not technically be pleading guilty to the gun charge. The gun charge could be revoked from his record upon completion of the diversion program, according to the Post.
The reported deal closes a nearly five-year investigation into Biden, who is also facing inquiries along with his father from House Republicans regarding an alleged $5 million bribery scheme involving Ukraine. The plea deal is not connected to the alleged bribery scheme.
Sen. Josh Hawley Agrees with Trump
Sen. Josh Hawley (R-MO) agreed with Trump that Biden’s plea deal shows the U.S. justice system is broken.
“So Hunter Biden gets a special plea deal, slap on the wrist – probably won’t do a day of time – while DOJ charges Trump as a spy and tries to put him in prison forever. Two standards of ‘justice,’” Hawley said.
Trump remains defiant against Biden’s DOJ as he is at the center of a federal investigation into his handling of classified documents. The former president surrendered to authorities at a Miami courthouse last week, pleading not guilty to 37 felony counts.

In the indictment, Trump is accused of holding onto classified documents “regarding defense and weapons capabilities of both the United States and foreign countries; United States nuclear programs; potential vulnerabilities of the United States and its allies to military, attack; and plans for possible retaliation in response to a foreign attack.”
Trump and many of his fellow Republicans say he is being targeted by the Biden administration in an unprecedented prosecution of the president’s chief political rival. House Speaker Kevin McCarthy quickly condemned the Biden administration after Trump’s indictment was unsealed earlier this month.
“It is unconscionable for a President to indict the leading candidate opposing him. Joe Biden kept classified documents for decades,” McCarthy tweeted. “I, and every American who believes in the rule of law, stand with President Trump against this grave injustice.”
