Millionaire activist Kaepernick links capitalism to white supremacy.
Former NFL player Colin Kaepernick boldly declares that black people can never truly be free under capitalism.
“Black liberation simply isn’t possible under capitalism,” Kaepernick passionately expressed in an interview with the New Republic published Monday. The former quarterback gained notoriety in 2016 when he began kneeling during the national anthem as a powerful protest against racial injustice.
In the interview, Kaepernick discussed a book on black history that he co-edited with prominent Marxists.
“I believe the anthology effectively presents this argument, and I hope it challenges readers to recognize that racism is not the sole ingredient of white supremacy,” Kaepernick explained. “White supremacy persists because of its connection to capitalism, heteropatriarchy, ableism, and more.”
Kaepernick left his football career in 2017 and now finds lucrative compensation for his activist work, including book editing. His current project is a book titled Our History Has Always Been Contraband: In Defense of Black Studies, which he edited alongside Marxists Robin D.G. Kelley and Keeanga-Yamahtta Taylor. Kelley is a UCLA professor who identifies as a “Marxist surrealist feminist,” while Taylor is an editorial board member of the International Socialist Review.
“I have long admired Keeanga and Robin’s work, as well as their unwavering political analysis and understanding that Black liberation simply cannot be achieved within the confines of capitalism,” Kaepernick expressed when asked about collaborating with “two of the most prominent black Marxists in the country.”
Since leaving the NFL, Kaepernick has amassed millions through sponsorships. He currently resides in a mansion reportedly worth over $5 million. His business ventures include a multimillion-dollar endorsement deal with Nike, an autobiographical Netflix series titled Colin in Black & White that draws parallels between the NFL Draft and slavery, and a children’s book called I Color Myself Different, which celebrates “Black identity through the power of radical self-love.”
