Republican assures that Hunter Biden’s plea deal will not affect congressional investigation.
A House Republican probing the Biden family’s foreign dealings said Tuesday’s plea deal between Hunter Biden and the Department of Justice will not impact the investigation.
“The Department of Justice’s charges against President Biden’s son Hunter reveal a two-tiered system of justice. Hunter Biden is getting away with a slap on the wrist when growing evidence uncovered by the House Oversight Committee reveals the Bidens engaged in a pattern of corruption, influence peddling, and possibly bribery,” Rep. James Comer (R., Ky.), who chairs the House Oversight Committee, said in a statement, calling it a “sweetheart deal” that would have “no impact” on Republicans’ investigation of the first son.
Biden agreed to plead guilty to misdemeanor tax crime, a move that will likely keep him out of prison. The plea deal ends a five-year probe by the Justice Department into Biden’s taxes.
The U.S. attorney’s office in Delaware said “the investigation is ongoing.”
House Republicans are investigating Hunter Biden’s business dealings in places like Ukraine, Russia, and China while his father was vice president.
“We will not rest until the full extent of President Biden’s involvement in the family’s schemes are revealed,” Comer said.
The Oversight Committee is reportedly in talks with a former business associate of Hunter Biden, Devon Archer, to sit for an interview about the first family’s foreign dealings.
Archer is a convicted fraudster and has not yet agreed to a date for the interview. Archer was subpoenaed last week by Comer, who said the first son’s former business partner “played a significant role in the Biden family’s business deals abroad, including but not limited to China, Russia, and Ukraine.”
“Additionally, while undertaking these ventures with the Biden family, your client met with then-vice president Biden on multiple occasions, including in the White House,” Comer wrote to Archer’s lawyer.
Archer and Hunter Biden were on the board of the Ukrainian gas company Burisma. Then-vice president Joe Biden was involved in policy on Ukraine at the time, and House Republicans are probing any possible corruption.
