Pew: Majority believe US failing on border under Biden.
Overwhelming Majority Believe Biden Administration is Failing at U.S.-Mexico Border Crisis
Nearly 3 in 4 Americans believe that the government under President Joe Biden is doing a “bad” job handling the crisis at the U.S.-Mexico border, according to new polling data from the nonpartisan Pew Research Center in Washington.
73% said the government was doing a “somewhat bad” or “very bad” job handling the crisis, compared to 23% who said he was in good standing.
Democrats Express Disapproval
Even among Democrats, there is significant dissatisfaction with the Biden administration’s handling of the border situation. When asked about the U.S. government’s handling of “the large number of people seeking asylum at the U.S. border with Mexico,” a whopping 62% of Democrats knocked the Biden administration for doing a “bad” job, compared to 35% who stuck by the Democratic president.
The survey, conducted from June 5-11, also revealed that negative ratings on the government’s ability to manage the border have increased from 68% to 73% during Biden’s first two years in office.
Concerns Over Illegal Immigration
Public concern over illegal immigration has risen significantly, with 47% of respondents now viewing it as a very big problem for the U.S., compared to 38% last year. This concern is nearly as high as it was in 2021, shortly after Biden took office and the number of noncitizens crossing the border illegally surged.
Despite efforts to address the issue, the number of immigrants encountered trying to enter at ports of entry without permission or who were arrested for crossing illegally has remained consistently high each month.
Bipartisan Agreement on Approaches
Interestingly, overwhelming majorities of both Democrats and Republicans agree on certain approaches to border and immigration policy. For example, 73% of Democrats and 91% of Republicans believe that noncitizens should be required to apply for asylum before they travel to the U.S. border, a policy that the Department of Homeland Security has already begun to implement.
Both parties also agree on the need to increase staffing levels at the border, reduce the number of people coming to the U.S. to seek asylum, and provide safe and sanitary conditions for asylum-seekers once they arrive in the U.S.
It is important to note that not all immigrants who illegally cross the border are seeking asylum, despite the Pew report referring to them as “asylum-seekers.”
The poll, conducted online among 5,115 U.S. adults, took place from June 5 to 11 and did not include a margin of error.
