Democrat Representative announces Senate bid, highlights church, abortion, and January 6 in campaign video.
Rep. Lisa Blunt Rochester Announces Candidacy for U.S. Senate
Rep. Lisa Blunt Rochester (D-DE) made a bold entrance into the race for the U.S. Senate with a captivating video. In her announcement, she emphasized her Christian faith, unwavering support for abortion rights, and condemnation of the January 6 riot.
A Strong Contender for Delaware’s Senate Seat
As Delaware’s sole representative in the House, Blunt Rochester is now vying to replace retiring Democratic Sen. Tom Carper in 2024. With her name recognition, Delaware’s Democratic lean, and a long list of key endorsements, she is widely regarded as the frontrunner in the race.
Blunt Rochester’s campaign launch video sets the tone with the soulful sounds of a Hammond organ and gospel piano. She speaks of “bright hope,” paying homage to Bright Hope Baptist Church and the faith that guides her. She also pledges to protect seniors, the environment, small businesses, and women’s reproductive rights.
I’m running to represent Delaware in the United States Senate.
I’m filled with Bright Hope for our future. But a more perfect union isn’t a destination. It’s a journey. Let’s go on it together.

Reflecting on the events of January 6, Blunt Rochester describes it as her “worst day,” shortly after sharing the tragic loss of her husband. A video of her praying over the House of Representatives chamber during the Capitol riot went viral, earning praise from many Christians.
However, despite her strong display of Christian faith and the promises made in her launch video, Blunt Rochester has faced criticism for supporting bills in Congress that some argue conflict with, and even target, people of faith.
A Champion for Abortion Rights
Blunt Rochester is a staunch advocate for abortion rights. She recently described the procedure as “health care” and vowed to fight until abortion is codified into federal law nationwide. In 2022, she voted for The Women’s Health Protection Act, which aims to enshrine Roe v. Wade into federal law.
Abortion is health care.
I am so proud to have fought for reproductive freedom my entire career in public service. In the House, I voted to codify Roe’s protections into law.

Support for the Equality Act
Blunt Rochester also voted for the Equality Act, which extends protections to LGBTQ Americans. Critics argue that this act could potentially infringe on the rights of people of faith, as it lacks provisions for churches and religious organizations.
The bill would allow the Department of Justice to take legal action against anyone who discriminates based on sexual orientation or gender identity. It also guarantees the right for individuals to use the bathroom corresponding to their gender identity.
