Thrill-seeker explains why he canceled Titanic sub adventure.
A Thrill-Seeker’s Decision: The Submarine Expedition
A thrilling adventure awaited a multi-millionaire and his fellow adventurers on OceanGate’s now-missing Titan submarine. However, he got cold feet due to concerns about the company’s approach.
A Change of Heart
Chris Brown, a sixty-one-year-old British digital marketing magnate, was all set to embark on the expedition. He had even paid a $10,000 deposit alongside his good friend, Hamish Harding, who is currently missing. Their decision to join the expedition was made after a few beers on billionaire Richard Branson’s private island in 2016, as reported by the New York Post.
However, Brown ultimately decided against it, stating, “the risks were too high in this instance, even though I’m not one to shy away from risk.” His concerns revolved around the design of the submarine.
Concerns and Corner-Cutting
One of Brown’s main worries was the use of a customized video game controller from 2010 to operate the submersible. While video game controllers are commonly used to pilot high-tech machinery, such as U.S. military drones, Brown noticed that the sub seemed hastily put together, with “old scaffolding poles for the sub’s ballast.”
Feeling uneasy, Brown reached out to the company, expressing his concerns and ultimately deciding not to proceed. He believed that the submersible’s design was “cutting too many corners.” He requested a refund, stating, “I’m no longer able to go on this thing.”
Hope Amidst Desperation
Despite his decision, Brown remains hopeful for the passengers of the sub. He has faith in his friend Hamish’s calm demeanor and strategic thinking, stating, “He’ll be extremely calm and will be processing plans, schemes, and ideas through his enormous brain. I fully expect he’ll be a calming influence on the others in the sub and will be giving them hope.”
Meanwhile, the search for the sub intensifies as time runs out. The Coast Guard estimates that the sub has less than 40 hours of oxygen left. Rescue crews are currently investigating underwater noises in the search area, hoping to locate the sub’s crew. However, nothing can be confirmed at this moment.
