Demi Lovato drops ‘Swine,’ a pro-choice anthem for Dobbs anniversary.
Singer and activist Demi Lovato releases powerful new single
Singer and activist Demi Lovato has surprised fans with the release of her latest single, “Swine.” This song was specifically created to promote abortion in response to the overturning of Roe v. Wade with the Dobbs decision in June 2023.
In a social media post, Lovato shared, “It’s been one year since the Supreme Court’s decision to dismantle the constitutional right to a safe abortion, and although the path forward will be challenging, we must continue to be united in our fight for reproductive justice. I created ‘SWINE’ to amplify the voices of those who advocate for choice and bodily autonomy.” She also included a short clip of the song’s music video.

Lovato expressed her desire for the song to empower not only birthing individuals in the country, but also anyone who stands up for equality. She wants everyone to embrace their agency and fight for a world where every person’s right to make decisions about their own body is honored.
The music video, directed by Meriel O’Connell, showcases Lovato dressed in red and passionately singing the lyrics in front of a burning building. In another scene, Lovato confronts a group of men who are about to make a ruling, while a crowd of people dressed in black sit before them.
As a singer who identifies as “non-binary” and uses they/them pronouns, Lovato also recreates the image of the Last Supper in the video.
The lyrics of “Swine” express Lovato’s disdain for anyone who believes abortion and promiscuous sex are immoral. In the opening verse, she boldly states, “God forbid, I wanna suck whatever the f*** I wanna/God forbid, I wanna f*** whoever the f*** I want/And if he c***, I guess I gotta be a mother.” The song continues with powerful lines like, “F*** what I think, I don’t know a thing/The government knows my body/No, it’s okay, it’s better this way, I’m only a carbon copy/Even if I’m dying, they’ll still try to stop me.” The chorus emphasizes Lovato’s message of personal autonomy, declaring, “My life, my voice/My rights, my choice/It’s mine, or I’m just swine.”
Lovato concludes the song with thought-provoking lyrics that challenge societal norms, saying, “Picture your faith, imagine your God and even your Holy Bible/is suddenly banned, do you understand?/Now doesn’t that sound entitled?/It’s your book, but it’s my survival. We gotta grow ’em, we gotta raise ’em, we gotta feed and bathe ’em/And if you won’t, they call you a witch to burn at the stake in Salem/Thought by now they’d change, but we’re still waiting/Let’s give these motherf***ers hell.”
