House GOP introduces resolutions to erase Trump impeachment votes.
House Republicans Seek to Expunge Impeachment Votes Against Trump
House Republicans have taken a bold step by introducing resolutions aimed at expunging the impeachment votes against former President Donald Trump. These resolutions, brought forth by Reps. Elise Stefanik and Marjorie Taylor Greene, seek to remove the charges from Trump’s record as if they had never occurred.
One of the resolutions focuses on removing Trump’s 2019 impeachment charges, while the other aims to absolve the charges from his 2021 impeachment. Although the timing of when these measures will be brought to the floor is still uncertain, the GOP caucus spokesperson has confirmed their introduction.
Democrats’ Weaponization of Impeachment
“The American people know Democrats weaponized the power of impeachment against President Donald Trump to advance their own extreme political agenda,” stated Stefanik. “From the beginning of this sham process, I stood up against Nancy Pelosi and Adam Schiff’s blatant attempt to shred the Constitution. President Donald Trump was rightfully acquitted, and it is past time to expunge Democrats’ sham smear against not only President Trump’s name, but against millions of patriots across the country.”
Greene’s resolution specifically targets the House vote to impeach Trump in 2019, which accused him of obstruction of justice and abuse of power related to a phone call with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky. Greene argues that the impeachment charges wrongfully accused Trump of misconduct, asserting that the circumstances did not meet the burden of proving high crimes and misdemeanors.
It is worth noting that Greene was not yet elected to Congress at the time of the 2019 impeachment vote. Nevertheless, she has remained a staunch advocate of the former president throughout his legal battles and federal indictments.
“The first impeachment of President Trump was a politically motivated sham,” Greene emphasized. “The Democrats, led by Nancy Pelosi and Adam Schiff, weaponized a perfect phone call with Ukraine to interfere with the 2020 election. Meanwhile, the FBI had credible evidence of Joe and Hunter Biden’s corrupt dealings, confirming their involvement in a foreign bribery pay-to-play scheme and receipt of over $5 million each. All of this information was revealed to Congress by the FD-1023 form from the FBI’s most credible informant.”
Stefanik’s resolution, on the other hand, focuses on removing the charges from Trump’s second impeachment, which took place following the January 6th riot at the Capitol. During this vote, Trump was charged with incitement of insurrection, making him the first president in history to be impeached twice.
Stefanik, as the chairwoman of the GOP caucus, argues that the articles of impeachment failed to prove Trump’s engagement in “insurrection or rebellion” or that his conduct amounted to a high crime or misdemeanor.
These resolutions come at a time when Trump is considering a run for the White House in 2024, with the support of several members of the GOP caucus. He faces tough competition from other potential candidates, including Gov. Ron DeSantis and former U.N. Ambassador Nikki Haley.
