Special Counsel John Durham: The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly

Special counsel John Durham made his much-anticipated appearance before the House Judiciary Committee on Wednesday, and it was quite a spectacle. Despite his humble and stoic presence on the stand, Durham managed to deliver a subtle zinger to Democratic Rep. Adam Schiff of California, who is now censured and thoroughly disgraced.

“To set this up, recall that when Schiff was actively promoting the Russia hoax as a member of the House Intelligence Committee, a couple of Russian radio DJs pranked him, calling his office posing as Russian informants who claimed to know about an encounter then-President Donald Trump had had with a Russian call girl who had pictures of ‘naked Trump.’ It’s still hilarious. Schiff rushed to the phone so fast, you would’ve thought it was a CNN camera.”

But that wasn’t the only highlight of Durham’s testimony. He also spoke about FBI agents who had apologized to him for the conduct of the bureau during the Crossfire Hurricane investigation into Trump and his associates. He even recounted the emotional reaction of the first supervisor of Crossfire Hurricane when handed a memo about the involvement of Hillary Clinton’s campaign in the investigation.

The Republicans Turn on Durham

During the hearing, things got a little heated on the Republican side when Rep. Thomas Massie ceded some of his time to Rep. Matt Gaetz. Together, they posed tough questions for the special counsel.

“Massie began by asking about Joseph Mifsud, the intel agent who supposedly gave George Papadopoulos the Russian information that led to the opening of Crossfire Hurricane. Durham admitted that they hadn’t interviewed Mifsud and that it’s ‘hard to say who Mifsud is.’ Gaetz then played a video of special counsel Robert Mueller being questioned by Rep. Jim Jordan in July 2019, where Mueller refused to say if he’d interviewed Mifsud or whether Mifsud was Russian or Western intel.”

Gaetz pressed Durham further, questioning the sincerity of his work and suggesting that the investigation may have been more of an inoculation than a true investigation of the FBI. He also criticized Durham for not finding Mifsud to subpoena him, despite finding Mifsud’s lawyer and his cellphones.

Throughout the exchange, Gaetz accused Durham of letting down the American people and being a barrier to true accountability.

The Omissions and Disappointments

While Durham’s testimony shed light on the lack of evidence behind the Russia hoax and the questionable conduct of the FBI, there were some areas that he failed to explore. One of these areas involved the more obscure figures within the intelligence community, like Joseph Mifsud. It’s unclear why Durham didn’t pursue these leads or include them in his investigation.

Additionally, Durham missed the opportunity to question Michael Sussmann, the attorney for the Democratic National Committee who played a role in the “Russian hack” narrative. The transfer of DNC material to WikiLeaks also remains a mystery.

Overall, Durham’s testimony had its good, bad, and ugly moments. While he exposed the flaws in the Russia hoax and the FBI’s conduct, there were also omissions and disappointments in his investigation. The full extent of the truth may still be elusive.
