Washington Post CEO funnels large sums to Democrats.
Patricia Stonesifer, a Generous Supporter of Democrats
The Washington Post‘s new CEO, Patricia Stonesifer, has made significant contributions to Democratic campaigns, according to campaign finance disclosures reviewed by the Washington Free Beacon.
Stonesifer has been a dedicated donor to Democrats for over two decades, contributing to various campaigns and organizations. In 2020 alone, she donated over $100,000 to President Joe Biden’s campaign and joint fundraising committee. Overall, Stonesifer has contributed more than $625,000 to Democrats and liberal organizations since 1993.
As the interim CEO of the Post, Stonesifer’s appointment has raised concerns about the newspaper’s editorial independence, given her close relationship with Amazon founder Jeff Bezos, the owner of the Post. Stonesifer has served on Amazon’s board since 1997 and has been a longtime friend of Bezos.
Despite her political contributions, the Post has declined to comment on the matter. Stonesifer is not the only Post leader with ties to Democratic politics, as the newspaper recently hired Kathy Baird, a board member of a liberal activist group, as its chief communications officer.
In addition to her financial support for Democratic candidates, Stonesifer has also been involved in philanthropy, particularly through her work with the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation. She has attended exclusive gatherings of wealthy liberal philanthropists, further highlighting her connections within the liberal elite.
Stonesifer’s involvement in politics extends beyond her financial contributions. She served as the first chair of Obama’s White House Council for Community Solutions and was considered for a role as his domestic policy adviser. Her influence as the Post‘s interim CEO will have lasting effects, as she has been tasked with hiring the newspaper’s next publisher and CEO.
While the Post has emphasized its role in holding government and elected officials accountable, it has faced criticism for its lack of critical coverage of President Biden. The newspaper recently discontinued its database of the president’s false and misleading claims, a practice it maintained throughout President Trump’s tenure. The Post‘s fact-checker stated that Biden’s falsehoods did not warrant the existence of the database.
