Pence urges abortion litmus test for 2024.
Former Vice President Mike Pence Calls for Strong Abortion Ban
Former Vice President Mike Pence made a powerful statement on abortion during the Faith and Freedom Coalition’s Road to Majority Policy Conference. As his 2024 rivals gathered, Pence laid out his version of an abortion litmus test, setting himself apart from other candidates.
Pence’s stance on abortion goes beyond what some of his fellow 2024 candidates, including former President Donald Trump, have expressed. He is advocating for a minimum 15-week abortion ban at the federal level, a policy that he believes should be a nationwide standard.
“Every Republican candidate for president should support a ban on abortion before 15 weeks as a minimum nationwide standard,” Pence emphasized.
Republicans have faced challenges in presenting a unified message on abortion, with experts pointing to it as a factor in the GOP’s disappointing outcome during the 2022 midterm elections. Even Senator Tim Scott stumbled when questioned about his abortion views as he runs for president. Meanwhile, Trump has criticized Governor Ron DeSantis’s six-week ban in Florida as “too harsh,” but has also taken credit for appointing three Supreme Court justices who could potentially overturn Roe v. Wade.
Pence, however, remains resolute in his stance. Reflecting on the one-year anniversary of the Supreme Court’s decision to overturn Roe v. Wade, he declared, “The battle for life is far from over.” He highlighted his own career moments where he championed anti-abortion policies, emphasizing the importance of restoring the sanctity of life in American law.
Democrats have seized on the perceived vulnerability of the GOP on abortion, launching a significant ad campaign in battleground states to emphasize its importance in the upcoming 2024 election. President Joe Biden also plans to make abortion policy a key focus of his own reelection bid.
Despite the Democratic onslaught, Pence remains undeterred. In response to candidates who argue that abortion should be left to the states, he firmly stated, “The cause of life is the calling of our time, and we must not rest and must not relent until we restore the sanctity of life in the center of American law.”
