Jack Smith wants the trial date for the classified documents involving Trump to be postponed until December.

Special Counsel Files Requests to Delay Trump’s Trial Date

Special Counsel Jack Smith has made several requests in the ongoing classified documents case against former President Donald Trump. One of the key motions is to move the trial date from August 14th to December 11th.

Smith explains that the reason behind this request is to allow Trump’s defense counsel enough time to obtain the necessary security clearances for reviewing the classified information. While interim approval should grant access to most of the documents, the final decision on security clearance could take up to 60 days.

Furthermore, Smith anticipates that the trial will be further delayed due to the Classified Information Procedures Act. In his filings, Smith includes a proposed calendar with the CIPA deadlines. Additionally, he requests to seal the witness list of individuals with whom Trump and his co-defendant, Walt Nauta, are prohibited from communicating regarding the case.

Trump Indicted for Mishandling Classified Documents

Earlier this month, a Florida grand jury indicted Trump for allegedly mishandling classified documents after his presidency. The indictment includes 37 charges related to the classified document scandal, with 31 counts for the willful retention of national defense information, a violation of the Espionage Act. Trump has pleaded “not guilty” to all charges.

During the arraignment, which lasted exactly one hour, Trump did not speak at all.
