Polls show growing concern among voters about Biden’s fitness for presidency.

A Growing Concern: Voters Question Joe Biden’s Fitness for Office

A recent poll reveals that an increasing number of voters are becoming anxious about President Joe Biden‘s ability to serve as commander in chief for a second term.

In this national survey conducted for NBC News, a staggering 68% of registered voters expressed moderate to major concerns about Biden’s mental and physical health, questioning whether he possesses the necessary qualities to lead the nation. This marks a significant 17-point increase from the same question asked in October 2020.

Conversely, only 32% of voters reported having little to no concerns, indicating a drop from the 48% who felt similarly in October 2020, just a month before the previous presidential election.

At 80 years old, Biden already holds the distinction of being the oldest person to assume the presidency. If re-elected, he would be 86 by the end of his second term. Concerns about his fitness for office stem from instances where he has lost his train of thought while speaking and moments caught on camera where he has stumbled or fallen over. These incidents have raised doubts about his ability to effectively lead the nation.

In April, Biden addressed these concerns, stating that his age does not bother him. He acknowledged the importance of others scrutinizing his capabilities, saying, “I respect them taking a hard look at it — I’d take a hard look at it, as well. I took a hard look at it before I decided to run, and I feel good. I feel excited about the prospects.”

The poll also posed the same question about former President Donald Trump, who, at 77 years old, is once again running for the White House and currently leads in the 2024 GOP primary polls. Fifty-five percent of registered voters expressed moderate to major concerns about Trump’s mental and physical health, an increase from 51% in October 2020. Conversely, 44% reported minor or no real concerns, a decrease from 49% in the previous survey.

Furthermore, the poll examined voters’ level of concern regarding the re-election and four more years in office for either Biden or Trump. Sixty percent expressed moderate to major concerns about Biden, while 58% felt the same about Trump. On the other hand, 40% had minor to no concerns about Biden, and 42% shared a similar sentiment about Trump.

In a hypothetical general election rematch, Biden emerged with 49% support compared to Trump’s 45%. The survey also explored a match-up between Biden and Florida Governor Ron DeSantis, revealing a 47%-47% tie in the general election.

The poll, conducted by Republican pollster Bill McInturff of Public Opinion Strategies and Democratic pollster Jeff Horwitt of Hart Research Associates, involved 1,000 registered voters and took place from June 16 to June 20. The survey was primarily conducted via phone and has a margin of error of plus-or-minus 3.10 percentage points for registered voters and plus-or-minus 4.38 percentage points for Republican primary voters.
