A Crusade Against “Woke” Ideology: Gov. Ron DeSantis’s Presidential Campaign
A super PAC supporting Gov. Ron DeSantis (R-FL) in his 2024 presidential campaign released an ad Monday, framing his candidacy as a bold crusade against the influence of “woke” ideology in America.
The 30-second spot, part of a seven-figure ad buy, will run in Iowa and South Carolina, two crucial early nominating states in the GOP primary calendar next year that will either help propel or sink DeSantis’s bid against his top rival in the field, former President Donald Trump.
“Gov. Ron DeSantis is waging a war on woke, and winning,”
the narrator says in the video. As clips show DeSantis engaging with supporters, the governor proclaims that “woke is an existential threat to our society.”
“I mean, it’s an attack on truth,” he says. “It’s a form of cultural Marxism.”
The commercial references DeSantis’s feud with Disney that started more than a year ago when the corporation criticized the governor for supporting legislation that bans discussions of gender identity and sexuality in elementary schools. It also draws on DeSantis’s criticism of transgender athletes competing in women’s sports.
The “War on Woke” ad from the super PAC also features former NCAA swimmer Riley Gaines championing DeSantis’s views on transgender issues. “He’s drawn a line and he said, ‘Enough is enough,'” Gaines says.
DeSantis has long made attacking “wokeness” a key part of his campaign as he attempts to unseat Trump as the GOP’s standard-bearer. He often touts the line “Florida is where woke goes to die” while out on the campaign trail. It’s a sign of one tactic that DeSantis is using to win over Trump loyalists — running to the right of the former president.
The governor remains the consistent second-place candidate in the GOP 2024 field, according to polling. But his poll numbers have somewhat dipped while Trump’s numbers increased despite ongoing legal problems, including a 37-count indictment over allegations he mishandled classified documents after leaving office.
Many conservatives have signaled that DeSantis is their top choice after Trump, pointing to his efforts in solidifying Florida as a conservative state and his support for the parental rights movement, which Never Back Down is seizing upon to woo primary voters.
“Ron DeSantis is fearless fighting for our kids, fighting for our values and winning. That’s the conservative road map through America. Never back down,” the narrator concludes.
